What makes BASF’s vitamin B2 unique?

As one of the biggest vitamin producers with decades of experience, BASF produces vitamin B2 with the highest and purest quality for several applications in the dietary supplements and food industry. It is also used as a “natural-origin color” in beverage applications.

We produce riboflavin by means of fermentation. Our premium technologies and processes enable us to produce riboflavin of superior quality and purity. Riboflavin complies with the major monographs (USP, Ph.Eur., FCC, etc.). Furthermore, Riboflavin (E101) complies with the EU regulations defining specifications for food additives. Excellent flowability and dispensability are key properties of our riboflavin products.

Riboflavin High Flow 100 exhibits excellent flowability and has superior dissolution properties, is much easier to handle, and produces less dust and lower static charge. Riboflavin High Flow 100 is pre-conditioned for good bioavailability,  and is vegetarian/vegan, kosher, halal, allergen-free and gluten-free to accommodate consumer needs.

BASF offers riboflavin as polymorph modification B, which has a major benefit in the coloration of beverages. Our riboflavin offerings include Riboflavin High Flow (HF) and Fine Powder (FP).

Riboflavin High Flow 100 is suitable for use in all solid and liquid dosage forms such as tablets, hard-shell capsules, effervescent and other instant formulas. Its superior dissolution properties make it optimal for direct compression of high-dosage vitamin B complex tablets. It is ideal for use in multivitamin formulations and equally suitable for low-concentration solutions and fine powder grade. In addition, it can be used as a colorant in liquid form and powder preparations, which must be dissolved in water prior to use.

Riboflavin High Flow 100 is also recommended for the fortification of various food and beverage products, such as multivitamin juices, baby food and instant-drink powders. It is also suitable for use as a colorant in liquid food products

Riboflavin FP is the most efficient colorant for powdered and solid food applications and must be dissolved in water or milk prior to consumption. Riboflavin Fine Powder gives your food and beverage products the brightest yellow to orange-yellow color.

Riboflavin is approved for use as a food colorant and as a vitamin B2 source in most countries. According to the classification of NATCOL (Natural Food Colours Association) Riboflavin by fermentation (E 101 (i)) can be labeled as “natural origin colour” or “natural colour” for a conceptual option for voluntary marketing claims. However, specific regulations in the respective countries and for the intended use have to be observed.

Health Benefits of vitamin B2

Vitamin B2, along with other B-complex vitamins, is important for metabolism, where it is a co-factor of enzymes involved in the metabolism and catabolism of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and purines. In addition, vitamin B2 is required for the generation of energy. Vitamin B2 is also involved in the metabolism of other B-vitamins, in the production of hormones in the adrenal cortex, and in the body’s antioxidant defense system, where it is a co-factor of the glutathionreductase enzyme.

Thus, vitamin B2 is of vital importance during all life stages. It is required for heart, brain and cognitive function, bones, joints and muscles, eyes, skin, immune system, liver, and more.
