Beta-carotenes are known as health ingredients and are used in several applications in the dietary supplement industry. Furthermore, they are also used as a food colorant for beverage and food applications.
Health benefits of beta-carotene
Beta-carotene has pro-vitamin A activity, which means when needed it can be converted to vitamin A in the human body. Therefore, beta-carotene serves as an important source of vitamin A, for example in plant-based diets.
As pro-vitamin A it provides a number of health benefits: it is important for the eyes (enabling vision), the immune system, skin and lung tissues, and for bone growth. Vitamin A is important throughout life, but particularly for procreation and pregnancy, where it is essential for embryogenesis and growth of the unborn child.
Beta-carotene is also an antioxidant, which supports the human body in its defense against oxidative stress, caused by metabolism and ageing processes or by environmental factors such as UV light and air pollution. As an antioxidant, beta-carotene is important for the cardiovascular system, metabolism, brain and memory support, joints and muscles, and for the liver.
