Rice Fortification

Rice is one of the most widely consumed staple foods for a large part of the world's human population. It provides 20 percent of the world’s dietary energy supply and is one of the main staples in many countries with severe vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Rice fortification offers significant leverage to counter malnutrition and many emerging countries are employing this fortification strategy through governmental food agencies and authorities.

With the coating method, vital nutrients are added to a genuine rice kernel. The micronutrients are liquefied with waxes or gums and sprayed onto rice grains to form a premix. Once blended with plain rice, the micronutrients do not wash off from the end product.

Color and bulk density of coated fortified rice are similar to natural grains. As the fortified kernel looks the same as non-fortified rice, segregation risk is eliminated when combined with unfortified grains.
