Pigments for poultry, aquaculture, and more
Animal Nutrition
We eat with our eyes. With our Lucantin® products, we offer high-quality carotenoids for pigmenting your breakfast eggs, shrimp cocktail, or salmon filet for dinner.
In addition, we provide Lucarotin® beta-carotene to supplement feeds for ruminants and other animals.
Carotenoids are pigments that occur naturally in plants, photosynthetic algae, fungi, and bacteria. In animals, carotenoids accumulate in tissues, providing a yellow to red color depending on the type of carotenoid.
Carotenoids are widely used in animal nutrition. For their coloring properties, they are incorporated into feeds to pigment egg yolks, broiler skin, fish flesh, and shrimp tissue. Since poultry and fish cannot synthesize carotenoids de novo, the degree of pigmentation depends entirely on the quantity of pigments consumed with the feed, as well as their bioavailability and color intensity. BASF, a leading global producer of carotenoids for animal nutrition, offers high-quality, functional carotenoid formulations with strong pigmentation efficacy in poultry and aquaculture.
