Human Nutrition

An essential micronutrient for well-being

Video: More than 30 years Vitamin B2 fermentation by BASF

Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is an essential micronutrient naturally contained in eggs, meat and dairy products. Plant-derived foods such as nuts, vegetables and grains contribute small quantities to vitamin B2 intake.
In the human body, vitamin B2 is a co-factor of enzymes that enable redox-reactions in metabolism. Vitamin B2 is thus required for conversion of food into energy, growth and development.

Vitamin B2 is water-soluble and major losses occur during milling of grains, polishing of rice, storage in light and cooking. Therefore, fortification of staple foods with vitamin B2 is practiced in several countries.

Population groups at risk of inadequate vitamin B2 intake are, for example, people who consume little or no dairy products or meat, vegans and vegetarian/vegan athletes.

The global vitamin B2 (riboflavin) market is expected to experience strong growth, primarily fueled by rising demand across a broad range of applications in human nutrition. This growth is largely driven by the increasing focus on dietary supplements and fortified food products.

The global health and wellness movement plays a central role in this trend, with more than 70% of consumers in developed countries now taking dietary supplements daily – many of which include riboflavin. In addition to supplements, vitamin B2 is seeing expanding use in the bakery and dairy sectors, as well as in functional beverages, where it supports both nutritional enhancement and, as a colorant, consumer appeal.
