Human Nutrition

An essential micronutrient for healthy vision

Vitamin A (retinol) is an essential micronutrient, which is naturally found in foods of animal origin such as liver, meat, fish, eggs and dairy products or as its carotenoid precursors in plant foods. In humans, vitamin A is required for light perception and normal vision.

Moreover, vitamin A contributes to the normal maintenance of organs such as eyes, heart and lungs and has a role in immune system function. Obtaining sufficient amounts of vitamin A from the diet is a public health problem in more than 50% of countries worldwide, particularly in Africa and Southeast Asia.

Rising health consciousness among global consumers and the shift towards preventive healthcare are boosting demand for vitamin A-enriched products. This has led to a sharp increase in the purchase of vitamins and supplements. Moreover, government-led nutritional programs in emerging economies, together with mandatory food fortification in specific regions, have led to more inclusion of vitamin A in staple foods.

Vitamin A is used in dietary supplements, fortified foods, and medical nutrition products. These uses in human nutrition account for over half of the global vitamin A demand.
