Ensures animal health and fertility

Precursor of vitamin A with additional effects

Beta-carotene has a positive effect on the fertility of male and female cattle. Comparable investigations exist for other animal species such as sows and breeding mares. Positive effects on the immune system and defense against infectious diseases in young animals were also observed. In addition, beta-carotene has also antioxidant properties.

Dietary β-carotene is recognized as the major precursor of vitamin A. It has been improved reproductive performance in both dairy heifers and lactating cows provided supplemental β-carotene. β-carotene protects against oxidative stress and stimulates immune system. Dietary deficiencies of β-carotene will decrease reproductive efficiency by directly or indirectly impairing ovarian function and the uterine environment, there by influencing oestrus, conception and pregnancy.

In general, the supply of beta-carotene is sufficient if the animals are grazing or fed fresh green fodder. During winter, the requirement of breeding cattle (i.e., 400 – 600 mg beta-carotene per animal and day) can be met only if high-quality silage is provided. Please note that the exact requirement depends on the type of breed, age and performance of the animal. Other preserved feeds (e.g., hay, maize, beet tops silage) require supplementation of beta-carotene at a level of at least 50% of the daily requirement. The requirement must be supplied regularly as beta-carotene is hardly stored in the body — in contrast to vitamin A.

A deficiency of beta-carotene occurs during the keeping of animals indoors, and when using feedstuff with poor beta-carotene content.

ß-carotene is found only in plants. Rich in ß-carotene are alfalfa, grass and grass silage. Poor in ß-carotene are e.g. cereals and mill by-products. Native contents show very large variations depending on vegetation stage, harvest time, preservation type (hay, silage), drying temperature and storage time (see figure). The preservation of green forage is accompanied by a lower content of ß-carotene. Therefore, ß-carotene should be supplemented in the winter feeding of cows and other ruminants or, in principle, of sows.
