Xangold® Lutein esters are known as health ingredients and are mainly applied in several dietary supplement applications. Furthermore, they are also used as a food colorant for beverage and food applications.
Health benefits of Lutein and Xangold®
Xangold® as a lutein is very important for the eyes since it selectively accumulates in the retina at the back of the eye, where the incoming UV light radiation hits the eye. Here it absorbs UV radiation and protects the eye from damage. The more lutein is accumulated there (the spot is called the yellow spot, or macula lutea), the better the possible eye protection.
Supplementation with lutein increases macular pigment density in healthy people as well as in patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD); it improves vision (visual acuity) in AMD patients and helps reduce the risk of disease progression. People with Western dietary habits consume only 1-2 mg of lutein daily, which is not sufficient to prevent AMD. At least 6 mg of lutein per day are recommended.
Xangold® lutein esters have excellent bioavailability reaching blood levels of approx. 1 micromol/L after 2 weeks of supplementation. Clinical studies with Xangold® lutein esters have shown that lutein esters increase macular pigment density (Trieschmann M et al., 2010) and improve visual function in AMD patients (Murray IJ et al., 2013).
Beside its function as a blue light filter, lutein is an antioxidant which supports the human body in its defense against oxidative stress caused by metabolism and ageing processes, or by environmental factors like UV light and air pollution. As an antioxidant, lutein is important for the cardiovascular system, metabolism, joints and muscles, the immune system, and for the liver. Recently, lutein has been attributed a prominent role in brain and memory support, since lutein selectively accumulates in the brain.
