Source of beta-carotene
Beta-carotene is a micronutrient which mainly occurs in yellow and orange fruits and vegetables, as well as in green leafy vegetables.
What makes BASF’s Betatene® unique?

It’s a natural, safe substitute for artificial colors, and provides the same clarity, stability, pure taste, and vibrant appearance.
Betatene® is known as a health ingredient and is mainly applied in dietary supplements, including soft gels, capsules and tablets. As provitamin A, beta-carotene is used for the fortification of multivitamin juices, beverages for athletes, food supplement preparations, health foods, etc.
Furthermore, in the food industry, beta-carotene is mainly used as a colorant in several foods such as lemonades, margarine, butter, edible oils, soup powders, pasta, baked goods, confectionery, ice cream, custard, cheese, yoghurt and other dairy products.
Health benefits of beta-carotene and Betatene®
Beta-carotene has pro-vitamin A activity, which means when needed it can be converted to vitamin A in the human body. Therefore, beta-carotene serves as an important source of vitamin A, for example in plant-based diets.
As pro-vitamin A it provides a number of health benefits for all life stages. It is important for the eyes (enabling vision), for the immune system, skin and lung tissues, and for bone growth. Vitamin A is important throughout life, but particularly for pregnancy, where it is essential for embryogenesis and growth of the unborn child.
Moreover, beta-carotene is an antioxidant, which supports the human body in its defense against the oxidative stress caused by metabolism and ageing processes, or by environmental factors such as UV light and air pollution. As an antioxidant, beta-carotene is important for the cardiovascular system, metabolism, brain and memory support, joints and muscles, and for the liver.
